Euro 2024 Talking Points: The Most and Least Impressive Teams & Predictions

The excitement for Euro 2024 is building, and as we approach the grand tournament, there are several critical talking points to consider.

From the standout teams to surprises and the ones that left us wanting more, let’s dive deep into the various facets of this premier European football event.

The Most Impressive Teams Leading Up to Euro 2024

France: A Powerhouse Reborn

France consistently remains a dominant force in European football, and their recent performances ahead of Euro 2024 only solidify their stature. Known for their stacked lineup featuring key players like Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann, the team demonstrates a combination of skill, experience, and depth.

With a robust defensive line and effective midfield, France exhibits tactical versatility, making them versatile against various playstyles. Their qualification campaign has been near flawless, reinforcing their status as serious title contenders.

Italy: The Azzurri’s Renaissance

After a notable victory at Euro 2020, Italy has shown no signs of complacency. Manager Roberto Mancini has skillfully injected a blend of youth and experience into the squad. Key players such as Federico Chiesa and Leonardo Bonucci continue to play central roles.

  • Strong defensive record
  • Highly adaptable midfield
  • Proven track record in recent tournaments

Italy’s tactical discipline, combined with their ability to adapt to different match situations, makes them a formidable team heading into Euro 2024.

Surprising Teams Making a Mark

Denmark: The Dark Horse

Denmark has consistently punched above their weight, showing resilience and tactical prowess. Players like Christian Eriksen and Kasper Schmeichel have provided the leadership required to compete against Europe’s top nations.

  • Impressive teamwork and chemistry
  • Robust defensive strategies
  • Impactful attacking plays

Their ability to come together as a cohesive unit and execute a well-orchestrated game plan makes Denmark a team to watch closely.

Switzerland: The Steady Climbers

Switzerland has turned heads with their disciplined approach and tactical execution. With players like Granit Xhaka steering the ship, Switzerland has demonstrated they’re more than capable of contending with Europe’s elite.

What sets Switzerland apart is their ability to maintain structure and discipline, keeping their defensive line tight while capitalizing on counter-attacking opportunities. Their consistent performance in qualifiers hints at a potential breakout at Euro 2024.

The Least Impressive Teams

Germany: A Period of Transition

Germany, a team synonymous with football excellence, has been uncharacteristically underwhelming. The squad is currently navigating through a transitional phase under the guidance of Hansi Flick.

  • Inconsistent performances in qualifiers
  • Defensive vulnerabilities
  • Lack of cohesion in attack

Although they possess a wealth of talent, including Joshua Kimmich and Timo Werner, inconsistency has plagued their path, leaving them with much to prove before Euro 2024.

Scotland: Struggling for Consistency

Scotland has had a rocky road in their preparation for Euro 2024. Despite having talent in the ranks, including Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay, their campaign has been marred by inconsistency.

Scotland’s struggle lies in their inability to string together a series of good performances. Erratic form and tactical shortcomings have resulted in a mixed set of results, casting doubts over their chances in the upcoming tournament.

Bold Predictions for Euro 2024

England to Make the Final

After a strong showing at both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, England is poised to make another deep run. Gareth Southgate’s men, featuring stars like Harry Kane and Phil Foden, have the talent and experience required to go all the way.

A Possible Upset from a Lower-Ranked Team

Based on current trajectories and potential underdog performances, teams like Denmark and Switzerland are well-positioned to deliver upsets. Their strong team dynamics and tactical astuteness can surprise higher-ranked teams, making for an intriguing tournament.

High-Scoring Matches

Expect thrillers with an abundance of goals, especially given the attacking prowess of teams like France and England. Their offensive firepower can lead to some high-octane matches, enthralling fans globally.

Euro 2024 is set to be a breathtaking event with several teams showcasing their mettle. While traditional powerhouses are maintaining their dominance, dark horses and lower-ranked teams are prepared to make significant impacts. As we edge closer to the tournament, fans can look forward to thrilling matches, dramatic upsets, and iconic moments.

Ndidi Set to Rejoin Leicester City

Wilfred Ndidi, the Nigeria international midfielder, is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract with Leicester City, according to Footmercato.

Ndidi, who left Leicester City as a free agent at the end of last season, has become one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market. The midfielder attracted interest from several top clubs, including Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus, and Everton.

During his last season with the Foxes, Ndidi played a pivotal role in their return to the EPL, contributing four goals, five assists, and maintaining an 82% pass accuracy across 32 league appearances. His defensive prowess combined with his ability to progress the ball has made him a valuable asset.

“Wilfred Ndidi had all the makings of a good deal for OM, OL, and AS Monaco,” Footmercato wrote. “At the end of his contract with Leicester, the 27-year-old Nigerian international midfielder was inclined to discover a new environment and opened the door wide to Ligue 1. Despite discussions with the clubs mentioned above, the man with 57 caps for the Super Eagles is not expected to cross the Channel this summer and for good reason.”

According to Footmercato, Ndidi has reached an agreement with Leicester for a contract extension. This is welcome news for the Foxes, who will retain a player with seven and a half years of experience at the club.

While there has been no official announcement from the club or Ndidi’s camp, the player is expected to remain in England. Everton has shown serious interest in signing Ndidi as a replacement for Amadou Onana, who is heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
